The Matlacha Bridge Reef Project Inc. is a non-profit organization that has been formed to turn a portion of the old Matlacha Bridge into an arificial reef in local waters. This idea formed and quickly blossomed into realityas individuals, the community, businesses and government entities banded together to make a difference. The old Matlacha Bridge has been a part of our community for decades and has been called by many the “fishingest bridge in the world”. Why then, not turn it into the “fishingest reef in the world”?
As local business owner Rod Mazzoli stated, “that bridge has played such an important part to the community for local people fishing that it’s just kind of a tragedy that it doesn’t continue its life as an artificial reef”. Artificial reefs have been built thoughout the entire United States, and it’s time we band together and fight for the same opportunity. An artificial reef can benefit the community in numerous ways from environmental to economic. In addition to increasing reef fish habitat, artificial reefs improve recreational and charter fishing and diving opportunities, provide socio-economic benefit to the local community and facilitate reef research.
The Matlacha Bridge has been a landmark of this community for decades…let’s continue it’s legacy!
